Vlog - Chats with the Chatelaine

Welcome to our very first, behind-the-scenes series all about life at Hedingham Castle!

Chats with the Chatelaine is hosted by Hedingham's very own chatelaine (‘chatelaine’ being another word for the estate's owner), Demetra Lindsay, who lives at Hedingham with her husband, Jason, and their 3 children, having inherited the estate from Jason's parents in the late 1990s. Over the next 10 episodes, we will delve into the history of the 900-year-old estate, how it has changed and evolved over the years and what it's like to live and breathe Hedingham today.

We would be so grateful if you could subscribe to our YouTube channel - and be the first to hear about our latest releases!

EPISODE 1: CAPTURED BY THE CASTLE

In this first episode of Chats with the Chatelaine, we discover the first part of Demetra and Jason's story of Hedingham; when they first arrived at the Castle and how it has captured them over the years, in more ways than one.

EPISODE 2: THE HEDINGHAM FAMILY

In the second episode, we introduce you to our Hedingham family - the team behind the scenes that makes the magic happen, from the groundskeeper to the holder of the purse strings and everyone in-between!

EPISODE 3: HOUSE RENOVATIONS PART I

In the third episode of the series, Demetra, with a little help from housekeeper Hazel, walks us through all the renovations that she and Jason have carried out in the Mansion House since they moved to the estate in 2003. Not a project for the faint hearted…but lots of fun along the way nonetheless!

EPISODE 4: THE SHAKESPEARE RUMOUR

The fourth episode is a very interesting one...have you heard of a chap called Shakespeare? Well, the Oxfordian theory argues that our dear ancestor, Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, was in fact the 'real' Shakespeare, and in this episode we speak to an expert on the subject, the wonderful scholar Dorna Bewley, to find out more...

EPISODE 5: OUR DEMANDING OLD AUNT

In this episode, we venture into the 900-year-old Norman Keep, fondly known as our demanding old aunt, in that she is always wanting more attention, even with best laid plans. She is definitely a labour of love but, as the jewel in the Hedingham crown, we wouldn’t have her any other way.

We are currently fundraising for the restoration of the Tudor Castle (as mentioned in this episode). If you would like to donate to this fascinating project we would be hugely grateful and very excited to share the progress with you - donations can be made here

EPISODE 6: THE GARDENS

In this episode we journey out into the gardens and find out more about what they were like when Demetra and Jason first moved to Hedingham and how they have been restored over the years to their former glory.

EPISODE 7: INTERESTING GUESTS

In this week's episode, we join Demetra and Jason for a look back at some of the famous faces that have visited Hedingham over the years.

EPISODE 8: HEDINGHAM HISTORY

In this episode, Jason delves into Hedingham's long and fascinating past. Discover more about our ancestors, the de Veres, and how they came to build the Keep and surrounding buildings. Jason also shows us in more detail the remains of the Tudor Castle that we are currently fundraising to preserve. EPISODE 9: GHOST STORIES

In this episode, Demetra shares some of her 'favourite' experiences with Hedingham's other-worldly inhabitants, including a tale about a late night visitor, a missing address book and a mysterious locked door…

EPISODE 10: SUSTAINABILITY

Being as sustainable as possible is very important to Jason and Demetra and, in the last episode of the first series, we take a look at what they have done over the years to improve the estate's sustainability and use of renewable energies.

Thank you for joining us on our very first series of Chats with the Chatelaine, we hope you enjoyed watching the episodes as much as we did making them!
