  • SUNDAY 3 MAY

12pm: Jules Pretty - How Story Boosts Climate and Nature Recovery

Join author and environmentalist Jules Pretty for a conversation exploring the power of storytelling in inspiring action for climate and nature.

Storytelling has shaped human culture for tens of thousands of years, helping us understand the world and our place within it. In a time of climate crisis and environmental change, stories can help turn passivity into hope and fear into action.

Drawing on his work in sustainability and conservation, Jules Pretty discusses how powerful narratives can encourage people and communities to care for the land and support nature’s recovery.
    -
2.30pm: Richard Negus in conversation with Demetra Lindsay
Join professional hedgelayer and writer Richard Negus in conversation with Demetra Lindsay as he discusses his book Words from the Hedge.

Often overlooked, hedgerows are one of the most important habitats in the British countryside. Drawing on his experience restoring and managing them, Richard explores the craft of hedgelaying, the realities of rural land management, and why hedges are vital for wildlife and the future of our landscapes.

Richard is a leading practitioner of hedgerow management, a writer on rural life, and co-host of the podcast Countryslide.

    MONDAY 4 MAY

12pm: James Canton - Renaturing: Small Ways to Wild the World

Twenty years ago, James Canton moved from London to the English countryside. Behind his cottage was a small field for sale. What began as a place for picnics and games soon became a project to bring nature back.

Over several years, James ‘rewilded’ the field by digging a pond, creating meadowland, and building habitats for birds, insects, and pollinators. Gradually, the once-empty space became full of life.

This raised an important idea: true rewilding usually happens on large landscapes, but smaller spaces can still support nature. Canton suggests the idea of ‘renaturing’ - restoring nature even in small places like gardens, balconies, or window boxes. Even a single planter with pollinator-friendly flowers can help wildlife thrive, showing that everyone can play a part in restoring the natural world.
    -
2.30pm: Michael J Warren in conversation with Rich Yates - The Cuckoo’s Lea
Join Michael J. Warren, author, academic, medievalist and naturalist, in conversation as he discusses the deep connections between birds and place. Hidden in the place names of English towns and villages, in copses, fields, lanes and hills, are traces of birds that illustrate how ancient people understood their world.

In The Cuckoo’s Lea, Michael weaves together early literature, history and ornithology to uncover how people encountered birds over a thousand years ago.  He reveals a heritage that still matters today, when so many places and their birds are threatened.

Michael will be in conversation with Rich Yates, CEO of Essex Wildlife Trust.
