Medieval Siege and Fair | Hedingham Castle Essex

Sunday 20th and Monday 21st Medieval Siege and Fair 10.00 to 5.00 Adults £12.50, Children £9.00, Families £37.00

The year is 1471. The Wars of the Roses lay waste to England’s green and pleasant pastures. The date is the 20th of April. John de Vere, the Earl of Oxford and key commander of the Lancastrians, having defeated William Lord Hastings at the battle of Barnet on the 14th of April, has escaped to Scotland following the Yorkists’ ultimate victory.

A force under the orders of William Lord Hastings, smarting from his loss of face on the battlefield, has marched the 50 miles from Barnet to take Hedingham Castle and seek vengeance.

One of Oxfords friends, loyal Lancastrian Lord Bonivent, has come from his castle at Stone in Kent to defend his ally’s family home. Will the castle hold? Or will Oxford lose his home and lands to one of his most hated rivals?

The return of the Medieval Siege Society will answer these questions in fine martial style! In amongst the bustle of the camp – a snapshot of life in the high medieval period – there’s Archery, Birds of Prey, a Maypole, Donkey Rides, The Dragons of Wye-Ten with a Dragon’s Egg Hunt and Puppet Theatre Shows, the Jester, Musicians and Coconut Shies! A Trebuchet in action! A set piece Battle! The Arming of the Knights! There’ll be craft stalls and traders, and lots of food stalls! The Keep will be open to explore – come early and enjoy a full day, packed with spectacle and fun!

No dogs are allowed at this event because the birds of prey may attack them.
