In authentic custom-made suits of solid steel armour, the Knights of Destrier bring the days of chivalry back to the ancient tilting lawns of Hedingham! At closing speeds of over 40 miles an hour, their Jousting is as close to the real thing as it gets! Enjoy the skill of the riders during the Hunting Games mid-morning, discover the secrets of the medieval armourer during the Arming of the Knights and then watch in awe as the Knights stage a tournament with no quarter given! Coda Falconry will be putting on two different Birds of Prey Displays with Hawks, Owls and a musical Raven, and you can visit the birds throughout the day. Have a go at some archery with the Norfolk Longbow Men, learn traditional maypole dances, ride a donkey! The Jester will be misbehaving and Blondel set the mood with wonderful music played on traditional instruments. The Tudor Roses will be demonstrating the fashions of the period and with craft and food stalls, face painting and tours of the Castle there’s something for every age and a great day out for all the family!
Now in its third year at Hedingham, A Vintage Affair returns! With a foot tapping Big Band playing live throughout the day, over 50 stalls of all descriptions, Lindy Hoppers, hair styling and a host of classic cars – a triumph of style and glamour, all set on the magical lawn in front of the Castle!
The ever exciting and popular Knights of Royal England return to Hedingham to recreate the classic Tourney in front of the Keep, an awesome spectacle of chivalry, hand to hand combat, mounted challenges and dark deeds! Surrounding it all will be a bustling arena full of craft stalls, a range of food and a host of entertainment! The Dragons of Wye-ten Puppet Theatre Show will be back, performing throughout the day! The Norfolk Longbowmen will be demonstrating the art of Archery – have a go! Watch a thrilling display of the Birds of Prey! Our Official Jester Jonathan de Hadleigh, will cause his usual mayhem with his Wife! Musicians, Donkey Rides, a Maypole, Coconut Shies and Face Painting provide constant entertainment throughout the day! Something for all the family in a great day out!
To commemorate 800 years since the sealing of the Magna Carta, and the close involvement with the rebel Barons of Robert de Vere, third Earl of Oxford and Lord of Hedingham Castle, we will be staging a spectacular day full of history, rebellion and battles! Knights on horseback, close quarter fighting, excommunications! Amongst all the action, the inner bailey surrounding the castle will be a medieval camp-site giving an insight into the lives of ordinary people, traders and craftsmen. Food stalls aplenty! Fascinating Guided Tours of the Norman Keep! And Riotous Assembly provide a musical documentary! History Happening!
