The Castle’s winter gardens are possibly the most romantic in the East of England, with at least 13 varieties of snowdrops covering the steep slopes of the motte and bailey and setting off the trees and lakes in front of the Georgian Mansion House. The Cafe in the Keep will be open for the sale of mulled wine and other refreshments. No advance booking, tickets available on the door. Dogs – on leads! – very welcome.

Magnolias in the Hedingham Gardens
Sunday 28th Wedding Open Day 11am to 4pm Free admission

A Wedding Open Day at Hedingham Castle provides the perfect opportunity to look round this most romantic of venues. In 2016, for the first time ever, couples will be able to hold their entire day within the majestic medieval grandeur of the Castle itself, from the Ceremony in the stunning Banqueting Hall, wreathed in candlelight, to the last dance in one of the most unique spaces in England. For more traditional receptions our permanent Marquee on the Tulip Lawn behind the Mansion House will be dressed and full of our selected suppliers. Discuss menus and flowers, photographers and favours, with our wedding coordinators on hand to answer any of your questions.

normannis in action
Sunday 17th Clash of Knights Triathlon 10am to 5pm Adults £8.50, Under 18s £6, Over 65s £7.50, Family £25

Historia Normannis, a 12th century re-enactment society, are staging a triathlon challenge with teams of knights battling for supremacy! Picture medieval murderball with teams trying to knock the crests from opponents’ helmets! The teams will route march and even run a 5km course in full chain mail, and then compete in an archery competition! All in aid of Colchester Samaritans! Surrounding the castle will be a living history camp with an insight into the lives not only of knights and noblemen, but also ordinary people, and how they got through their days. There’ll be falconry displays, and you’ll be able to have a go at archery, and even fire a trebuchet! And of course, a full on, no holds barred battle to round things off nicely! It’s a great day out for all the family, and in addition to the sponsorship raised for the Samaritans, we’ll be donating an element of the ticket price to East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices.

Medieval Siege
Sunday 1st and Monday 2nd Medieval Siege 10am to 5pm Adults £14, Over 65s £12.50, Under 18 £10, Family £42

To celebrate its 800th anniversary, the Medieval Siege Society will be reconstructing the siege of Hedingham by King John, surrounding the Castle with armed men, archers and siege engines! In amongst the bustle of the camp – a unique view of life in the high medieval period – you’ll be able to try your hand at Archery, watch a fascinating display by Coda Falconry, dance round a Maypole and ride a donkey! The Jester and his Wife will be demonstrating how not to bring up children! Authentic period band Blondel will be playing, and there’ll be a Coconut Shy, craft stalls, face painting, traders and lots of food stalls! The Keep will be open to explore, with guided tours available – come early and enjoy a full day, packed with spectacle and fun!

Now in its fourth year at Hedingham, and livelier than ever, A Vintage Affair returns! With a foot tapping Big Band playing live throughout the day, over 50 vintage stalls of all descriptions, Lindy Hoppers, hair styling and a host of classic and vintage cars – it’s a triumph of style and glamour, all set on the magical lawn in front of the Castle!

The Knights of Royal England!
Sunday 29th and Monday 30th Jousting with the Knights of Royal England! 10am to 5pm Adults £14, Over 65s £12.50, Under 18s £10, Family £42

The ever exciting and popular Knights of Royal England return to Hedingham to perform two classic jousts in front of the Keep, awesome spectacles of chivalry, hand to hand combat, mounted challenges and dark deeds! Surrounding the arena will be craft stalls, a wide range of fabulous food and a host of entertainment! Coda Falconry will put on two flying displays and you can meet the birds in between the jousting! The Dragons of Wye-Ten Puppet Theatre Show will be performing throughout the day! The Norfolk Longbow Men will be demonstrating the art of Archery – have a go! Our Official Jester, Jonathan de Hadleigh, will cause his usual mayhem with his long suffering wife, Judy, but she gives as good as she gets! Musicians, Donkey Rides, a Maypole, Coconut Shies and Face Painting provide fantastic family entertainment all day long!

A great day out in the company of some interesting, beautiful and strange vehicles – and their owners! And if you have a classic of your own, bring it along for free admission! (Pre-registration essential)! We’ll have food vendors and the Castle Bar, the Keep will be open and there some wonderful walks in the grounds. It’s not just a great classic and vintage car show, it’s a great day out for all the family!

The Scarlet Pimpernel
Wednesday 24th The Scarlet Pimpernel 6pm Adults £14, Over 65s £12.50, Under 18s £10, Family £42

Before Zorro, Batman and Superman there was the Scarlet Pimpernel. Paris, 1792. Each day scores of the French nobility are sent to the guillotine. They are trapped in Paris. There is no escape. But rumours whisper of a league of young English gentlemen of unparalled daring who are risking their lives to spirit aristocrats across the channel. They leave no trace behind except a nor from ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’. The ruthless spy master Chauvelin is determined to stop the rescuers by fair means or foul and, desperately outnumbered, the Scarlet Pimpernel and his men must use all their wits to evade capture and stay alive. With original songs, spectacular sword fights and a little bit of romance there is something for the whole family to enjoy in this exciting and swashbuckling musical adventure.

The Pantaloons pay their last visit of the year to present their production of Jekyll and Hide. The performance will be inside the Castle, and seated.
